Directing a film or video is exhilarating.  Creating sets, lighting and composing still fashion and portrait shoots gave me a great understanding of composition and creating mood with light.  In film and video I apply those standards because each move of a film camera is a different composition and mood must be driven from each image the camera sees...   Brian

Crockett Vocational High School

Distance Learning Project :  “Art Across Airways“

“Art Across Airways” is a distance learning program which links local high schools to local artists via internet connection and PowerPoint presentation.  Our artists will develop an art project which can be taught through photographic stills, drawings and video files presented over the internet.  A teacher in the local school will follow a program guide which describes the program as well as deliver curriculum which follows along with the online presentation.  Students will spend 1 school hour per week working on the online project as an extra credit or community service credit for their high school or college application.  The project will last at least 6 to 8 weeks and end with an exhibit of their completed works for public display and certificate of completion presentation.  Students will also have the opportunity to work as interns at the gallery during non-school hours as well as summer interns after the school year.  Students will be given the opportunity to work with in-house artists to learn the business of being a working artist.

The AAA program provides students with professional artists as mentors well as providing artists a way to give back to the community.

 Documentary Filmmaking & Photojournalism Project:

“Somebody has to tell the Story”

“Somebody has to tell the Story” is a hand on learning project which incorporates high school students into the ranks of documentary filmmakers and photojournalists covering local non-profit organizations success stories.  Students will be assigned a grass roots local non-profit organization to create a 5 minute documentary about what they do and the success of their efforts.  They will be trained on the ethics of journalism and how to integrate into the environment of their subjects.  They will be taught basic lighting and composition for on site video production.  They will be provided with a basic camera and light kit if they do not own one and be given a deadline to complete their projects.  Basic editing skills will be taught if the school does not have facilities.

This program is an ongoing project for winter and summer.  Students should have a drive to become a journalist, writer or filmmaker.  They will have an opportunity to work with working filmmakers, producers, editors and actors during their internship in this program.  They will present their final projects in a public screening as well as their projects being forwarded to the organizations they cover to help promote the organizations at their public forums.

Detroit Trombly High
10 students at Trombly High School compete for $9000.00 in scholarship funds in the Courageous Persuaders 30 second PSA contest.  They are competing against other high schools across the state of Michigan. Two teams of 5 created a 30 second PSA to tell middle school students not to use alcohol.  In 4 school days and 1 editing day they completed their projects.  With the help of their teacher, Ms. Sanneh, DPS-SDFSC Second Step Program consultant, Ms. Saba and myself, Brian, the students were successful in their task.  Now for the competition in March. The Connected Village Project and Bridge to the Future
Along with families, children and counselors from SOSAD (Save Our Sons and Daughters) Showtime sponsored the screening and refreshments for this event. (r) Krystal Robinson - Showtime Michigan POS representative made the event possible.  We have received many thank you calls and emails from the participants and counselors.  This film has helped to open up a dialog among survivors who looked for an outlet to air their feelings and needs.  We want to thank Frenchie Davis, Winfred Robinson and Saba Gebrai for their help in putting our local team together.

The Connected Village Project was funded by the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan

The Connected Village Project visits the
Tuskegee Airman Museum - Alexander Jefferson, LT. COL (RET) was a  most excellent guide for this tour.  His personal sacrifices as an airman and the stories of his experience as a prisoner of war had the kids talking about the tour for days afterward.
